Here is a sample Family Fun Getaway to the Inn on Poplar
Day 1
From Washington DC areas and points North; Head south on RT 29 from Gainsville. Keep the kids happy by stopping off for some home made ice cream at the Moo Thru in Remington, Virginia. The milk used in Moo Thru ice cream comes from their own prize winning grass fed Holstein herd that grazes on the family farm. This tsty treat is made on site, need I say more?
Jump back in the car and continue south about 30 more miles. Take 15 Business for a quick stop in downtown Culpeper where the kids can pick up some arts and craft supplies at 145 Art and Design Studio on East Davis Street. Mom can pick up some of the best chocolates in Virginia at the Frenchman’s Corner, and Dad can check out the gourmet cheese and wine.
Jump back in the car for a short country drive past rolling fields down 15 south to the historic town of Orange.. Where the stocked cookie jar awaits you at the Inn on Poplar Hill. A family and pet friendly B&B., with six comfortable guest rooms. Families will like the Magnolia room which sleeps 4, or invite the whole group and take over all 6 of the comfortable guests rooms.
Innkeepers Victoria and Marty will provide you with directions for your next days adventures. But for now just stretch your legs and tire out the little ones, exploring the 28 acres of nature trails. Grab the bounty from the French Man’s Corner and a specially packed Smoor’s Kit and hike down to the stock fishing pond. Marty will light the bonefire and you and the kids can enjoy a few ghost stories and toasted Marshmellows. If the kids need to burn off some more energy have them run laps around the Blackberry maze.
The kids will love the camping ambiance and your back will thank you for selecting the comfortable bedding at the Inn.
Day 2
Wake early to the smell of coffee delivered to your door., and breakfast cooking. Victoria uses fresh local ingredients and is always happy to accommodate your special dietary requests. In early May you might even be lucky enough to visit on a day when fresh picked wild asparagus in on the menu.
Adventurous anglers can head down to the stocked pond, to try their luck for one of the large big mouth bass, cat fish, crappie. Rumor has it that last years biggest fish was a 6 lbs Bass. Of course this is a great opportunity to let Mom sleep a little later and have breakfast served in bed!
After Breakfast, while the kids are raring to go head over to explore the history of our country at James Madison’s presidential home Montpelier. Spend the morning discovering the recently renovated property and exploring the gardens.
In the afternoon head back to the Inn on Poplar Hill to take a nap in the hidden hammock, while the kids hit the trails or play yard games. May through July buckets are available to pick the wild Wine berries and blackberries that line the walking trails. If you can resist eating all of your bounty Victoria will add them to the fresh baked morning muffins or pancakes.
Day 3
After another great breakfast, head down the road to Oakencroft farm to saddle up for a trail ride along the South West Mountains. David Lamb the owner is a real gentleman and cowboy, He will match the rider to one of his trusty steeds, selecting from a wide selection of gentle horses that are perfect for first time riders as young as 7.
After the ride, satisfy your cowboy hunger at the BBQ exchange in Gordonsville where you will find excellent ribs, amazing sauce and not to miss cupcakes.
After lunch, walk over the Civil War Museum for a little more history. You may inspire the future doctor or historian in family with the display of civil war medical artifacts, uniforms and weapons.
Head back to the Inn on Poplar Hill for a family bowling tournament on the Wii, or another family meeting around the camp fire and a great nights sleep on a nice firm mattress.
Day 4
After another great breakfast meander south through Keswick to Charlottesville along a bucolic country drive, that President Jefferson referred to as the” Eden of the United States”. Spend the day on Carter Mountain visiting the Presidential Homes of Thomas Jefferson; Monticello and James Monroe: Ash Lawn Highland. Enjoy an authentic 18th century Fare at Michie Tavern. Pick up some Virginia Wine at any of the Vineyards the new, Trump winery, Bleinheim Vineyard, and Jefferson Vineyards. Before heading back to the Inn on Poplar Hill for you last night, don’t forget to Pick your own apples or peaches at Carter Mountain Orchard, Where you can also sample of the latest Prince Michelle vintages.
Be sure to arrive back at the Inn at Sunset to set off on a Hot Air Ballooning Adventure where the adventurous members of your group can soar over the Virginia Country side.
